OBJECTIVES OF THE COLLEGE

 1) To provide quality higher education to the rural people of Sivagangai District, an educationally backward area in Tamil Nadu.

Before  the College was started in 1965, the poor students of this area had no access to higher education. This region was terribly backward and the poor people, deprived of higher education, found it difficult to get decent and lucrative jobs. So the people were employed mostly as cooks. The birth of our College has changed this trend. Now, every house in and around Tiruppattur has a graduate. It is needless to say that the students of this locality are at present well placed in life due to the valuable contributions of this college in shaping their future.

This aim has been achieved by the following measures:

§         Preference is given to the students of this locality in admission

§         Strict discipline is enforced in the College campus

§         The Management and the Principal take all the measures to run the college for all 180 days in a year without any shortfall.

§         As teachers are the backbone of quality education, they are encouraged to  pursue research by deputing them under FIP programme of UGC.

§         To keep abreast of the  latest developments, teachers are deputed for refresher courses and orientation courses.

§         Teachers are allowed on duty to present papers in National and Inter-national conferences and paid T.A. and D.A. from UGC funds.

§         Experts from different subjects are invited regularly for delivering lectures to update the knowledge of the students.

§         In order to inculcate research aptitude, students are often taken for a visit to national laboratory, the planetarium, AIR, major libraries, places of archaeological importance, museums, and for field study for specimen collection and survey.

§         Collaborations with the national laboratories, research institutes are entertained to update the knowledge of the staff.

 2) To uplift the socially oppressed communities by bringing higher education within their easy reach.

§          This objective has been fulfilled by giving priority in the admission, with other criteria being equal, to the socially disadvantaged candidates.

§         Strict implementation of eradication of untouchability, racial and caste discrimination, ragging and eve-teasing also helped the College to achieve this objective.

§         Remedial and special coaching classes are conducted for  these students

§         In addition, financial assistances provided by the government in the form of  scholarships are disbursed expeditiously to the students and this contributes to the realisation of this goal.

 3)      To empower women  with economic independence  through collegiate education.

 ·        The college is a boon to the women population of this locality as they can gain access to the portals of higher education.

·         The disciplined academic ambience of the College encourages the parents to admit their daughters to our institution.

·        The Principal and the Discipline Committee have totally eradicated eve-teasing.

·        Academic Programmes along with Vocational Training for girls like Tailoring, and imparting knowledge on the small scale production of household consumables like candles enable  the girl students to become self reliant.

·        There has been a phenomenal rise in the admission of the girls students  because of the encouragement given by the College Management. This is evident from the fact that the number of girl students are outnumbering boy students in each class(vide Annexure : Tables and Charts)

4)  To provide employment oriented education.

§         New courses like B.Sc. (Information Technology ) and  M.Sc. Computer Science are introduced.

§          B.A. English Literature course was converted into a vocational course, Communicative English.

§         The conventional courses like B.A. (History),  B.A..(Economics) are strengthened with job oriented subjects like Tourism for History, and Entrepreneurship and Computer Applications for Economics.

§          Part time career oriented like DCA, PGDCA, PGDCM, PGDPM & IR, DTP, Backery Technology and Tourism and Travel Management are available.

§          Efforts are taken to introduce Health Economics, Disaster Management, and Coastal Zone Management to revitalise M.A. Economics to suit the needs of the local people.

 5) To instil the sense of self discipline and   moral values such as honesty and communal harmony in the minds of the students and motivate them to have lofty thoughts in accordance with the College Motto  engraved in the College Emblem

§        The statue of Goddess Saraswathi along with the Crescent and the Cross on either sides, in front of the main building, indicates the fostering of  the religious harmony.

§        Everyday starts with a prayer song of Goddess Tamil, not any religious song, being played over the public address system and students stand up in attention till the end of the song. This not only shapes the mind but also inculcates the feeling that the College is a Temple of learning.

§        The students are being greeted with moral and character building adages and  maxims written on a black board by the NSS.

§        The teachers while lecturing cite examples from great epics and Holy Books of all major religions.

§         The preceptors teach the students good manners, punctuality, polite behaviour, dressing etiquettes, gender equality and so on.

6)     To bring out and develop the innate talents of the students.

§         The functioning of various clubs like Tamil Literary Club and Photo Club helps the students to draw out their hidden talents.

§         The conduct of various meetings, seminars, exhibitions, competitions like essay writing, quiz programmes and cultural programmes organised by the Departments and the College enables the students to discern  and develop their skills.

§         The NSS, NCC and Youth Welfare units foster the talents of the students in the co-curricular and extra-curricular spheres.

§         The Physical Education Department creates many an outstanding sports person.

§         Endowment prizes are instituted by eminent people of different walks life to promote  both  the academic and histrionic talents of the students.

§          The College Management awards prizes to University Rank Holders and Outstanding Sport Persons.

§         Academic Prizes are given by the College to the best student in each subject in each faculty.

7) To serve the society by extension activities, especially making the rural and Illiterate people aware of the fruits of research in the field of Science and Technology.

·        Community development coupled with class room education is another noble aim of the College. This has been achieved by the effective implementation of community oriented programmes like literacy, hygiene and sanitation, rain water harvesting, scientific agriculture, use of bio-fertilizer, income generation programmes by our students especially, NSS and NCC volunteers.

All these objectives  and their realisation contribute  towards molding the students, the architects of future India.

 8. What are the efforts of the college to bring in “community orientation” in its activities?

NSS, NCC and Department Association have closer ties with the rural mass through literacy programmes, population education, medical camps, vocational training, adult education, personal hygiene programmes, etc.

At the beginning of the academic year, a meeting will be conducted by inviting the parents, teachers and management to have a close interaction with regard to different academic problems and measures.

Our College promotes communal harmony and secularism. The very presence of the statue of the Hindu Goddess,  Saraswathi  with the Crescent (Islam) and the Cross (Christianity) on each side of the statue bears testimony to the fact. We take pride that there has never been a communal strife in the history of our College. This communal integrity has been maintained even when there is communal turbulence existing in the society. Thus, the students are guided to live in groups amicably.

9. Indicate the efforts to promote general / transferable skills among the students such as

 a. Capacity to learn

The teachers plan ahead with regard to the topics they are going to deal in the class. Students are informed about the topic to be discussed in the class by the teacher one week ahead. They are further motivated to read the topic and make notes regarding the difficulties faced by them. These difficulties will be explained by the teacher in interactive mode during regular class sessions. Further students are encouraged to take seminar classes on the lessons of study so that they will have an opportunity to consult reference books in the library.

 b. Communication skills

The Association meetings and seminars are conducted frequently so that all the students in the class will have an opportunity to present papers and participate in the programmes like oratorical contest  with a view to overcoming the stage fear and to develop good communication skills. Further, group discussions are arranged to improve the communication skills of the students and keep abreast ofthe latest trends in the fields. The students are deputed to take part in the inter-collegiate debates, quiz programmes, essay writing competitions and their travelling and daily allowances are met by the College.

 c. Numerical skills

Science students are encouraged to improve the numerical skills by not using the calculators for scientific calculations.

d. Use of information technology

The availability of large number of magazines in Information Technology in the Library provides an impetus to the students to learn Information Technology. Further, courses on information technology are organized in the college. Computer Science and Information Technology has been made compulsory for B.Com. and B.B.E.course students.  From the next academic year onwards, it will be made compulsory for all students.

The office procedures are computerised with the required software and all correspondences are made with the use of computers. Further, our Library is in the process of computerisation. Information Technology Experts are invited for providing exposure to students. The students of B.Sc.( IT), B.Sc. and M.Sc (Computer Science) are deputed  to the software companies while carrying out their project work.

 e. Work as a part of a team and independently

The organization of Associations Meetings, College Day Celebrations, Sports Day Celebrations provide the students opportunities to work as a part of a team. In addition, office bearers of the Associations are given individual responsibilities to work independently.

 10.  Any other college specific innovations, which have contributed to its growth.

The College was started by a single donor, Vallal Thiru NTS Arumugam Pillai,  a well known philanthropist. Since its inception, the College has been managed by  his family members. Hence, the Management Committee has the freedom to execute   various progressive measures to uplift the academic standards and enforce discipline in the College. The Management believes that the discipline is the backbone of individual’s progress. Hence, a greater attention is devoted to infuse discipline and the erroneous students are taught to correct their wrong doings. In the case of the students who do not mend their ways, the Management is firm in taking action against them. This aspect of discipline is much admired by the people of this region and hence they prefer our College to admit their wards in large numbers,  thus resulting in  the tremendous increase in the strength of the College.

The College strives hard to get all possible help including the scholarships to SC/ST, MBC, DNC and BC students. Hence our college is a boon to these socially deprived and depressed students. This is evident from the fact that the number of  students belonging to these categories surpasses the government  stipulated quota.

As the students are drawn from remote hamlets, there is a fundamental difficulty in switching over to learning everything in English medium from their vernacular language. In order to dispel the fear syndrome and make the  students  feel at  home, Bridge Courses are conducted. Moreover lectures are delivered in both English and Tamil.

Attractive educational programmes like B.Sc. (IT), M.Sc. (Com.Sc.) and M.Com. are introduced.

The introduction of vocational courses like B.A. Communicative English is another step to attract the students for enrolment.

To make the students of our College employable, vocational training programmes like Desk Top Publishing, Tourism and Travel Management and Bakery Technology are being imparted with the UGC assistance.

An Entrepreneurship Cell has been established to provide awareness and also to guide the students in getting self-employment. Similarly, Career Guidance Cell provides information regarding employment avenues and guides the students to seek employment using its good office with the prospective employers.

The College Management believes in the theme, “Sound Mind in a Sound Body”. With a view to projecting this ideal, the outstanding sportspersons are given free boarding and lodging and certain other educational concessions by the Management. The promising sportspersons are given admission in various courses irrespective of the marks obtained by them.

To develop self-confidence in the youth, Karate training is given. Thus, the students of our College rise to all occasions and bring laurels to our College by winning major inter-collegiate tournaments and a number of students find a place in the university teams.
